Music for Reading with Francesca Gavin

Music for Reading with Francesca Gavin

by Kaitlyn Davies

Music drifts in the window from the neighbour below, the subwoofer of a car rumbles through the pavement. Notes appear on screen, subtitles failing to capture the soundtrack.

In bed, on the calçada, at the cinema— music finds us where we are. What happens when music finds us while we’re reading? Does it pose a distraction, or block out the noise of the outside world?

Judging by the number of you that ask us what’s playing on our stereo, or tune in to the music titles scattered throughout the store, we figure you’re also interested in the interplay between music and books, reading and listening.

And so, we bring you Music for Reading, a series asking our favourite DJs and writers to create a soundtrack for reading. Our first guest is Francesca Gavin, curator, writer, host of the NTS Radio show Rough Version, and editor of the book of the same name.
