Well Read Book Club: In Search of a Common Paradise
by Kaitlyn Davies
·
Gardens are inextricably linked to humans, traced as far back as the Garden of Eden and as here-and-now as the potted basil plant on your kitchen counter that you can’t seem to keep alive.
We can extend the metaphor of the garden out to many things; sports teams, washed up shores, the Internet, apartment buildings, book stores. But a garden is just a garden (indeed, a book store is just a bookstore), unless you believe in its radical potential. The potential that, when things are looked after, looked for, they can come together in a way that is entirely new.
In Search of a Common Paradise, taken from the subtitle of Olivia Laing’s “Garden Against Time”, is the theme of our Spring Book Club, exploring the conditions, people, and possibilities present in gardens.
This season, we’ll read:
My Garden (Book) by Jamaica Kincaid, discussed 7th April @ 19h
The Mushroom at the End of the World by Anna Tsing, discussed 24th May (in partnership with Jardins Abertos, more details soon!)
Oval by Elvia Wilk, discussed 30th June @ 19h
To kick off the season, and to celebrate the arrival of spring, we’re hosting a succulent garden workshop with Atelier Casinha on Sunday, 22nd March, peppered with some of our favourite short-form writing on gardens.
All materials are provided, and space is very limited. Tickets on Luma now.
