Black Power / Poder Negro (1969)

This book, published in 1969 by Edições Don Quixote, translated into Portuguese texts by Malcom X, Stokely Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver, James Forman, Norman Mailer, Arnaud Durban, Andrew Kopkind, and Eugene Genovese.  The back cover reads (translated from the Portuguese):  "According to Stokley Carmichael, Black Power 'consists of a call to Black people in the United States to unite, recognize their heritage, and build a sense of community. It is an invitation to Black people to begin defining their own goals, managing their own organizations, and supporting them.' It was within the civil rights movement that the Black Power movement emerged. Essentially, it represents the end of the first movement and the beginning of a new one with radically different goals: it is no longer about integration into American society, but rather about opposition to its economic, social, and political structures." In Portuguese: "Segundo Stokley Carmichael, o Poder Negro (Black Power) "consiste num apelo aos negros dos Estados Unidos para que se unam, reconheçam a sua herança e edifiquem um sentido de comunidade. É um convite aos negros para que dêem início à definição dos seus objetivos, à gestão das suas organizações e ao apoio às mesmas". Foi no seio do movimento dos direitos cívicos que surgiu o do Poder Negro. No fundo representa o fim do primeiro movimento e o começo de um novo com objetivos radicalmente diferentes: já não se trata da integração na sociedade americana, mas sim de oposição às suas estruturas económicas, sociais e políticas."
